The Four Spiritual Seasons

God gave us the beauty of the seasons.  They each offer something new to look forward to, while we also know they won’t last forever. Whether we love spring, summer, fall or winter; no matter the season we’re in, they all provide something beautiful. Summer might be your favorite season, but there is still something so beautiful about a fresh blanket of snow on the trees.

God promises seasons will always change

After God flooded the earth because of its sinfulness he promised never to do it again. Genesis 8:22 says “while the earth remains, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.”

Sometimes when we’re going through a hard time in life, whether it’s something like our babies not sleeping through the night or even something more tragic like a death in the family, it can feel like that difficult time will never end. But the promise we received from God is that it won’t last forever because no season does. If he can open the floodgates during a time of drought to help the flowers push through and blossom, He can make a change in your life too. Just like each season we experience outside has its purpose, each season we face spiritually also has a purpose.

There is a time for everything

We need to be properly equipped to handle the season we are in. Just like we wouldn’t wear flip flops in a snow storm, we have to know what spiritual season we are in so we can have the correct perspective and be able to lean on God and understand what He is doing in those times. Gods hand is on all seasons, even if we are in a difficult season we can trust in the Lord and know that he is working all things for our ultimate good.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

There are 4 spiritual seasons

There are 4 spiritual seasons that easily reflect the seasons we find in nature, winter, spring, summer and fall.

The spiritual season of winter

The spiritual season of winter is a stretching season. During this season we experience lots of inner growth. God is increasing our capacity for what He is preparing for us. This season can be hard and discouraging. We might not feel the growth happening but just like a tree in winter, we are very much still alive on the inside preparing for what’s to come.

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16

The spiritual season of spring

The spiritual season of spring is a season of pruning, where God is cutting away at the dead branches that won’t produce good fruit. He may be removing things from our life. We might loose friendships, bad habits, or sinful behaviors. In this seasons though, we are loosing to gain more, to gain the life God wants from us. We will know in this season if our foundation is on the Lord or on ourselves because when the things we thought held our worth a re stripped away we will learn to lean on God instead.

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24

The spiritual season of summer

The spiritual season of summer is a dry season. In this season we will thirst for God and feel He is far away. But even when we are feeling far from the Lord, he is always there with us and He has a purpose for this season. In this hard season we may notice things that normally satisfy our thirst now do not.

Read Psalm 22

The spiritual season of fall

The spiritual season of fall is a harvest season. This is when you get to reap what you have sown during the other seasons. God will still correct you and mold you but this season will be easier and full of blessings. We get to reap the fruit!

John 10:10  I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Remember that a truly abundant life comes from following Jesus and embracing the fruits of the spirit

the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Fully embrace your season and know he has you there for a reason. When we fully embrace the season we are in, this is us sowing good seed for the harvest to come.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3
