How to wake up everyday with gratitude
It is winter time here on our homestead, and for most of my life this time of year left me feeling ungrateful, annoyed, and let's face it, depressed. I complained about the cold, the snow and the cloudy weather. And guess what, that didn't change a thing. It was still cold, still snowy and still cloudy. One day I came across a quote that instantly changed my perspective. It said, "If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life, but still the same amount of snow." It was at that time that I realized my own negative thinking was causing a long season of my life every year to be miserable.
"If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life, but still the same amount of snow."
Until I learned to change my outlook, until I learned how to wake up everyday with gratitude for the good things, this time of year felt like it was never ending. Over the years, every winter I am intentional about taking the time to be out in the silence of the winter snow. I take it all in with a grateful heart. I thank God more deeply for my warm bed, for hot baths, for steaming cups of tea and for cozy fires in the fireplace. I enjoy the calm feeling of snowflakes softly falling from the sky. I take the time to enjoy the rest from the hard summer chores of gardening and tending to the yard. And because of God's grace and recognizing His hand in the details, winter has become my favorite season of all.

A beautiful poem by an unknown author titled thanksgiving observance says this:
Count your blessings instead
of your crosses;
Count your gains instead of
your losses.
Count your joys instead of your woes;
Count your friends instead of
your foes.
Count your smiles instead
of your tears;
Count your courage instead
of your fears.
Count your full years instead
of your lean;
Count your kind deeds instead
of your mean.
Count your health instead
of your wealth;
Count on God instead of yourself.
